This is about the idea of absolute truth and some thots on it. Initially, this post was claiming to be about postmodernism and EC and metanarrative and lots of other things that i can’t really claim to speak for/to in a smart way. So, i’ll just talk about my own thoughts on absolute truth
Seems like i am reading a lot of stuff about emergent xians buying into the postmodern thing regarding absolute truth. When emergence and postmodernism are talked about like this, it’s usually in some negative light (and if it were true, that would probably a good idea)- and always from ‘outside’ rather than ‘inside’- i pretty much disagree… but i think i can see where these writers are coming from.
I am not interested in rejecting absolute truth or debating the existence thereof, but i’m rather weary of shams and playacting that tries to pass itself off as truth (nevermind absolute or all-encompassing and complete-can’t-be-added-to truth). I think my hesitation regarding ‘truth’ is more about a rejection of the tactics of individuals and groups who attempt to co-opt truth to further an agenda, political or otherwise, than about some fuzziness regarding the person of Jesus.
I suppose that rejecting things that have often been associated with Jesus can be confused with rejecting Jesus. I can see that at first glance. But often these critiques delight in pointing out the self-stultifying nature (thanks for the link, andrew!) of the “no absolutes” claim, which indicates an attempt to think this issue thru. But i think the “no absolutes” stuff is silly and say simply, “we ought to be more careful with what we call ‘absolute’”.
